When most people think of chiropractic care, they picture adults with back pain. But one of the most important — and often overlooked — times to have the spine checked is right at the beginning of life.
Birth is one of the most physically demanding events a human body goes through, and that includes the baby. Even in a straightforward delivery, significant force is placed on a newborn’s head, neck, and spine. In assisted births involving forceps, vacuum, or emergency C-section, those forces are even greater.
This can result in subtle spinal misalignments — particularly in the upper neck — that interfere with the nervous system. Since the nervous system controls everything in the body, even minor tension at this level can have wide-reaching effects on a baby’s health.
The pressure used on an infant is no more than you’d comfortably apply to your own closed eyelid. There are no sharp movements or cracking sounds. Most babies sleep right through it — many find it deeply relaxing.
We recommend having your baby’s spine checked within the first few weeks of life — you don’t need to wait for a problem to appear. Think of it like any other newborn health check: a proactive step toward the healthiest possible start.
Chiropractic care for infants, when performed by a trained practitioner, is extremely safe. Adverse reactions are rare and typically limited to mild, temporary fussiness as the body adjusts — just as adults sometimes feel after a treatment.
