Preparing for birth is about so much more than packing a hospital bag. The months leading up to your due date are a powerful opportunity to build a strong foundation — physically, mentally, and emotionally — so that you feel informed, supported, and ready for whatever your birth brings.
Here’s how to set yourself up for your best experience.
No single practitioner can cover everything, and you don’t have to rely on just one. A well-rounded care team works together to support you through every stage of pregnancy and birth.
OB or Midwife Your primary maternity care provider is the anchor of your team. Whether you choose an obstetrician or a midwife depends on your pregnancy, your preferences, and your birth plan. What matters most is that you feel heard, respected, and confident in their care.
Chiropractor Chiropractic care during pregnancy helps keep your pelvis aligned and balanced, which gives your baby the best possible position for birth. Regular adjustments can reduce back and pelvic pain, ease round ligament discomfort, and support your nervous system throughout pregnancy. A well-aligned pelvis can also mean a more efficient labour.
Acupuncturist Acupuncture is a wonderful complement to pregnancy care. It can help with nausea in the first trimester, fatigue, breech positioning, and in the final weeks, preparing the body for labour. Many women find it deeply relaxing at a time when the nervous system is working overtime.
Massage Therapist Pregnancy massage relieves the aches and tension that come with a changing body — tight hips, sore shoulders, swollen legs. Beyond the physical relief, regular massage reduces cortisol levels and supports better sleep, both of which matter enormously in the lead-up to birth.
Prenatal Fitness Staying active during pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for your birth. Prenatal yoga, Pilates, swimming, or fitness classes designed for pregnancy build the strength, endurance, and body awareness you’ll draw on during labour. A strong core and mobile hips make a real difference. We love Women’s Strength Collective or Collective Wellness.
Physical preparation gets a lot of attention, but your mental and emotional readiness is just as important. Birth is intense, and going into it feeling anxious or uninformed can make the experience harder than it needs to be.
Your best birth isn’t necessarily the one that goes exactly to plan — it’s the one where you feel prepared, supported, and empowered no matter how things unfold. Building the right team around you is the single most important step you can take.
